Getting Certified... But with what?

I previously wrote a post abut the PMP certification, and one thing that I noticed as I was looking into it, was the requirements to even be able to take the test to get certified. So I decided to take a look at what other certifications are available to those who interested in getting certified.

PMP (Project Management Professional)
Offered through PMI
Prerequisites for the PMP:
  • Secondary degree
  • 7,500 hours leading and directing projects
  • 35 hours of project management education
or
  • Four-year degree
  • 4,500 hours leading and directing projects
  • 35 hours of project management education
The cost to obtain the PMP credential is $405 for members and $555 for non-members.

CAPM (Certified Associate Project Manager)
Offered through PMI
Prerequisites for the CAPM:
  • Secondary degree
  • 23 hours project management education without professional work experience
or
  • Secondary degree
  • 1,500 hours of project experience
The cost to obtain the CAPM credential is $225 for members and $300 for Non-members.

CPM (Certified Project Manager)
Offered through International Association of Project and Program Management (IAPPM)
Prerequisites for the CPM:
  • A Bachelor’s university degree or above, or globally equivalent; OR Certified Project Professional (CPP).
  • Minimum 4 years / 48 months non-overlapping project and program management experience during which at least 5,000 hours are spent leading and directing project tasks in all project and program management domains.
  • 36 contact hours of CPM project and program management training on CPPMGuide syllabus.
  • Pass the 3- hour CPM Examination, which is comprised of questions based on the IAPPM CPPMGuide Body of Knowledge.
The cost is $370 for the certification, a $70 annual fee, and a $70 annual renewal fee (for fellows, members or associate levels).

MPM (Master Project Manager)
Offered through American Academy of Project Management (AAPM)
Prerequisites for the MPM:
  • 3+ years of project management experience.
  • Applicants are required to submit the resume to the Board for review and approval.
  • Applicants that have less than three years project management experience they may be granted a waiver if they hold a Master’s degree, possess other approved training, have a military background or are project management trainers.
The cost for the application is $300, no exam fee is required.

CompTIA Project+
Offered though CompTIA
Prerequisites for the CompTIA Project+:
  • This certification has no prerequisites.
  • However, one year of managing, directing or participating in small- to medium-scale projects is recommended prior to pursuing this certification.
The cost to write the exam for the CompTIA Project+ is $277.
